What plants to put on a terrace or balcony in full sun?

For an optimal exposure of the terrace or the balcony, the south side is privileged. Indeed, it allows to receive the rays of the sun during a good part of the day.   • Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a fragrant plant that reseeds itself and adapts to any type of soil. It is enough to place it in a corner in partial shade and to cut it down twice a year in order to obtain a vigorous plant with very green leaves.
  • Mint (Mentha) is to be grown in a 15 cm deep pot by planting cuttings. Pruning will be done 2 to 3 times a year.

The radishes

Radish is a fast growing vegetable. In the case of a balcony or terrace, all you need to do is:

  1. Choose a container or planter with a depth of 10 to 15 cm, filled with well-ventilated soil;
  2. Water copiously;
  3. Sow seeds and cover with a thin layer of soil;
  4. Aerate the mulch to allow the shoots to pass easily.

Good to know: a slightly damp soil makes it easier to monitor the ratehumidity and the mulch keeps this rate constant. It is also useful to reserve the radishes an exposure in partial shade.

Row beans

In the case of a balcony with vis-à-vis, or fitted with metal guardrails, plant row beans allows you to combine the useful with the pleasant. Indeed, these climbers constitute a reservoir of food as well as a unique screening. To do this, here are some tips to consider:

  • Pair with vegetables like radish, salad, peas or corn (need a larger pot in the latter case);
  • Let the bean seeds soak overnight before sowing to allow the plants to emerge quickly.

Essentially in pots, growing raspberries adapts perfectly to balconies or terraces. To succeed :

  1. Use a pot that is 30 to 40 cm deep and at least 25 cm wide;
  2. Place a layer of mulch at the foot of the raspberries;
  3. Add dried leaves to prevent evaporation and promote the proliferation of fungi useful to the soil and plants.

Regarding the size of raspberries, here are some indications to take into account:

  • Non-returning raspberries only produce once a year. They are pruned just after the fruiting period;
  • The rising raspberries fruit twice a year, generally in July and August. The branches of the year are to be cut in half while those of the previous year are to be cut flush.

Note: it is advisable to avoid cutting dry or dead stems. The rest is to be kept in order to ensure the harvests.

The salads

  1. Choose a tub or planter 15 to 20 cm deep;
  2. Prepare and sow as in the case of radishes, but more lightly. Buy plants directly from the garden center if necessary;
  3. Plant without too much space in order to obtain plant cover and prevent the soil from drying out quickly.
  4. Harvest after 1.5 months in summer or 3 to 4 months in winter, depending on the variety.

Chinese palm or hemp palm

the hemp palm is the ideal ally to give an exotic touch to a terrace or a balcony with southern exposure. Also known as Trachycarpus fortunei, this palm is visually recognizable thanks to its trunk covered with fibers similar to hemp. When autumn arrives, it produces dark purple fruits that birds particularly appreciate.

It should be put in a pot that is twice the size of the root ball. Without forgetting to drain well and to use a fertile substrate. Repotting is necessary every 3 or 4 years.
